fabulous united states military, the coast guard has been fabulous in providing assets to protect everybody out on the bay. it is one heck of a logistics program to get this whole program started and here we are the culmination of nearly a year of planning. we've had exercises, we've had lots of meetings down in san francisco up at the marines memorial, this is a fabulous program, we had a great medical exchange yesterday. senior leaders seminar third year in a row has gotten a lot of attention. we have a lot of new people who haven't been here for the past couple years, we have a lot of people who have been here for the last 3 years, and one of the major consistent people who has been behind this whole program is the chairman of the san francisco fleet week association, general -- major general mike myers who i'm going to ask to come up and make is remarks. >> thank you, lewis. when i accepted the responsibilities for organizing san francisco's fleet week, the guidance given to me by our honorary co-chair was bring the fleet back to fleet week and make it productive with a missio

people who police it and patrol it. we went along with the coast guard to survey the damage. they took us along on the ride. this coast guard crew heads into the water braving the waves to see if slain di left a mark. they're spoichg the bay and the shores looking for damage and not finding much. even with the storm gone it's not smooth sailing for the crew members. boats like this operated by crews for the coast guard can handle up to eight feet. that's what they saw by the bay bridge on monday afternoon. the wind is a completely different story. >> with the winds being too high, it would be too dangerous. >> reporter: with the winds weakening, they were able to take on a huge job today, searching the water for debris lick this that could -- like this that could hurt you. >> you will get the tree limbs floating around in the bay. >> reporter: they lie just under the water, invisible to boaters. that's why the coast guard said it's best you stay out. >> if they don't have to go on the water, to stay off the water. >> reporter: and the coast guard wants to see if you have a boat, s

a little about from captain stow about the different authorities that the coast guard can bring to bear in different situations. but could you talk a little bit about the partnerships and relationship and how that plays across the coast guard mission set? >> well, first i'll talk about my capacity challenges and my area of responsibility covers the rocky mountains to madagascar. the same area of responsibility as admiral lochlear except they have the arctic and antarctic as well. so, obviously with 13,000 people covering that aor, a little over 200 ships, i'm very dependent on partnerships. i work with 71 countries with whom i have 65 bilateral agreements with those entities. but everything really starts at the most local level first. so, it's appropriate to hear from captain stow and the network of partnerships that she's dealt here in the bay area, but we have this lattice work that goes across my entire pacific region. and then i need to focus on what do i do in the event of a threat right now in dealing with the arctic. what if i have a deep water horizon spill there? because n

are expected to hear from town officials who are meeting with coast guard officials as well to give us the very latest on the conditions. but take a look behind me. this is the big threat right now. and this is the coastal tide. and it's high tide right now. the massive waves are crashing down on to shore. you can see the beach erode right before our eyes. there was a fencing there. that has been washed away. you can see the waves come over this protective sand dune and actually flood the area right in front of these waterfront properties. and that's obviously a big concern for residents and town officials here. they're concerned about the storm surge and the flooding. and that's obviously something they're going to keep a watchful eye on. but clearly the combination between high tide, the full moon which makes it even higher tide, and also the long, lingering effect of hurricane sandy is all a combination for potential disaster. carol? >> sandra, i also wanted to ask you about those people who are -- who are waiting to be rescued off the coast of north carolina. i know that you've

ft.-into the boat and a lot of water came on board. the coast guard was nearby and he was able to in blankets and they are pretty cold. the boat was brought back to pier 39 and then it was taken away. most of these people come out on the water every day and they do not have issues. the coast guard was in the right place at the right time and it is safe to say that this was not the friday night that they expected. all of them were wearing their life jackets. >> to berkeley law students are in jail because they are accused of killing a bird. they were last seen throwing around a bird. take a look at the screen this is what the bird looked like. witnesses stated that they carried the bird and its severed head out of the room. they will be charged with killing wildlife. >> the st. louis cardinals came back from behind and beat the nationals. that means that the giants will >> though today's are back at the coliseum and they were there cleaning out their lockers. the tigers who were led by just sjustin verlander . they received huge support from the fans after their final game. >> we f

arizona. allie rasmus joins us from the coast guard in alameda. good afternoon, allie. >> reporter: good afternoon, once the fog clears the coast guard plans to send oftry to fi a plane wreck. half-moon bay airport is where 75-year-old andrew hayden of florida took off in his single-engine plane before 6:00 a.m. monday morning. according to the san mateo sheriff's spokeswoman he flew the plane here to visit his daughter who lives in the bay area. he was supposed to arrive in tucson yesterday afternoon but never made it. now the coast guard, airport's rescue coordination center and san mateo county sheriff's office launched a search to find any sign of the pilot and his plane. now, the plane they are searching for looks similar to the one in this picture. this is a picture provided to us at the coast guard command center. they said it's the picture they are using to search for wreckage. an 87-foot long coast guard cutter has been out in the water overnight as well and so far no sign of this plane. >> his radar tracking had him pretty much right off half-moon bay and that was the las

the members of the coast guard there. were only one to three foot seas and they were whipping me around. i felt like it was a crisis. i want to show you this boat on back river. this is exactly where the coast guard wants to see your boat, docked up out of the water so they don't have to deal with you. we want to show you video from our tour of the chesapeake. they responded to know calls for search and rescue and that was a great thing. they were geared up and ready but luckily they did not have to. they were concerned about the very trech clearous -- treacherous water. this did go out today to survey storm damage and search for debris. all those tree limbs that fall down, the branches, those will eventually make their way into the bay and that becomes problematic for boaters. sometimes it hides below the surface. so the coast guard went to look for them and report them back. >> if it gets washed out into the bay, that's where we get into trouble with the boaters. the boaters coming out, especially at night, they won't be able to see the debris. it gets caught up around the pili

3, san francisco style. a bachelor party on the bay ends with a coast guard rescue. good evening everybody, i'm in for rajai mathai. >>> and not the rescue that the bachelor was hoping for. a would-be groom found himself and his guests reaching for life boats, when they struck somebody out on the bay, causing them to take in water. and that meant help from the coast guard. the boat was towed in, and the bachelor will certainly have a good story to tell. >> reporter: that is right, i'm smiling, because this was a good news story. now, this was a pretty serious situation, but the 22 people on board didn't know that. the passenger and the crew was out for a party, a bachelor's party, on a boat called the "neptune," you can see here the passengers have their life boats on, and that is good news. the san francisco fire chief said they got a distress call about 9:00 tonight, the boat taking on water 400 miles outside of pier 39. luckily, the san francisco coast guard got out there before the boat started to sink. the guest of honor, or should i say, the groom-to be was taking it all in

the abc2 news room. this is the u.s. coast guard. it's just rescued 14 crew members from the rafts after they abandoned the h.m.s. bounty. 16 people were on this ship at this time. look at this video we're just getting in here. we can take it full and see the coast guard rescuing the incredible, incredible rescue here. you can see them in the water right there, trying to rescue these men, and put them on the rafts here. and again, this is just outside of portsmith, virginia. again the h.m.s. bounty has been a star of some motion pictures, if you have been going to the movies. it's an incredible vessel. it was just here in baltimore a couple months ago. this is the video here of people being rescued right off the angry, angry atlantic. and an incredible scene they're taking care over. did we get this from the coast guard? is that the video? ok. we did get this from the coast guard. this is coast guard video. and you can -- 14 crew members, so we still have two missing. two missing crew members in the water here. again you can go online at abc2 news.com and see this video. an incredi

, that's become a critical skill set. for every active duty, every reservist and even our coast guard auxiliaryist, 35,000 volunteers, some you may see outside the gate and say, wow, the coast guard hangs onto its people a long time. they're median age, older than me, but they volunteer their services, including during an emergency response. and they, too, are ics trained to support in a time of emergency. >> sustaining these skills is something that, as you say, jody, is a deliberate action. we're in the process of doing that right now. we have built san francisco fleet week and its associated exercises into our training continuum, and we'll continue to do so into the future. this will give us several milestones on our calendar that will get our heads back into this very complex arena. so, we certainly understand that. i think we're going to be seeing guidance coming from the secretary of the defense in the next couple of years that will elevate this in terms of our responsibilities and mission sets. so, we're in the process of laying the groundwork for that right now at camp pendleton. >> ann? >

of the ship's crew did not make it. and another is still missing. but the coast guard was able to bring the rest to safety. abc's matt gutman shows us. >> reporter: its final journey began last week, as it heads for its winter home in st. petersburg. "the majestic" made its debut in the 1962 film "mutiny on the bounty." and was ready for the swashbuckler "pirates of the caribbean." but before it left its home in connecticut, "the bounty" changed its course, abc news has learned. captain robin walbridge moved east, hoping to avoid the brunt of sandy. the captain facebooked his reasoning. saying, a ship is safer at sea than at port. but 20-plus-foot waves and gale-force winds caused it to lose power. the coast guard got the s.o.s. call around midnight. but it could take hours for a rescue. because of the heavy winds, it took nearly seven hours before the coast guard chopper got to the scene. they found "the bounty's" crew, 100 miles offshore, bobbing like human corks. they were in this covered raft. you can see their faces peeking out. in 50-mile-per-hour winds, the fuel burning fas

south korean coast guard on illegal fishing. the incident took place on tuesday in south korea's exclusive economic zone. clashes between the coast guard and chinese fishermen often occur during the peak fishing season. the south korean coast guard says the chinese fisherman was a crew member on one of the two boats it seized. the chinese fishermen started brandishing knives and coast guard officers fired warning shots and the man was hit by a rubber bullet. he was airlifted to a hospital and declared dead. south korea's foreign ministry conveyed the regret over the incident to the chinese embassy in seoul. last december a south korean officer was stabbed to death by a chinese fisherman during ra. > member of japan's self-defense forces are tracking chinese naval ships. they say they approached japanese territorial waters west of okinawa. the disputed senkaku islands are located in the area and territory japan controls but china claims. pilots with the maritime self-defense force air patrol spotted it tuesday. they found the ships 49 kilometers off the island near taiwan. japanes

joins us from the coast guard station. >> reporter: the coast guard has been searching overnight, on the water and by helicopter, still searching for those two men missing since yesterday morning. video from yesterday morning after the boat washed up on the rocks 11:30 you can see it crash and overturned, the boat was tossed by a large wave. four men from san francisco were an board two wearing their life jackets made it to land safely. it took them about an hour to make it from the beach to by homes where they were able to use a neighbor's phone to call 911. >> it wasn't that big of a boat that and the life vest and the guy told me they weren't wearing them, so i don't know, i didn't think it was going to turn out well for them. >> reporter: one of those men who made it to shore was rushed to the hospital. coast guard helicopter and multiple boats were launched to look for the two men still missing. the coast guard will resume their helicopter search starting at 7:00 this morning. kara clapper, abc7 news. >>> -- the trial is set to begin today for the woman charged with murderin

coast guard officers have spotted three chinese government ships inside japanese waters. the three marine surveillance vessels were navigating near the senkaku islands near the east china sea. japan nationalized the islands in september. china and taiwan claim them. chinese government ships have been seen in the area ever since. a fleet of ships from japan's maritime self-defense force and coast guard have taken part in a drill to improve communications between the two services. the vessels pursued an unidentified ship in the sea of japan off the prefectures of w kyoto. the scenario was based on a helicopter spotting a suspicious ship. the helicopters chased the ship while sharing information by radio. they eventually forced the ship to come to a stop. during the drill, a coast guard helicopter was refueled on an msdf destroyer. wednesday's exercise was conducted in response to an incident in 1999. the maritime self-defense force and the coast guard failed to fully cooperate when two north korean spy ships intruded into japanese waters in the sea of japan. >>> six members of the ok
